Description

The former House of Detention cells, now located within Kingsway College Clerkenwell Centre, were originally part of the male corridor of the Middlesex House of Detention. Constructed between 1845 and 1847 by William Moseley, they are situated southwest of the former Hugh Myddelton Schools. The cells are built of brick laid in English bond and feature a shallow-arched brick ceiling, with sections supported by cast-iron columns and wrought-iron beams with cross braces. The floors are stone. The layout consists of five bays of unequal width, housing seven cells to the north and three to the south. Most of the cells have flat-arched entrances. These cells are part of the larger surviving prison complex that relates to the former House of Detention, located below Kingsway College Clerkenwell Centre.
