Description

Numbers 10-36 (even) and attached railings form a terrace of houses built in 1795, developed by James Taylor. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a parapet concealing the roof. There are three storeys over a basement, with two windows each, except for numbers 10 and 36, which have three. The terrace is laid out in a shallow concave crescent shape. Most window and doorway openings are defined by gauged brick heads. Numbers 14-28 feature a round-arched entrance with a cornice and fanlight. Number 10 has a late 20th-century shop front, and number 12 has a flat-arched entrance with an overlight and bracketed canopy. Number 30 has panelled pilasters on its base supporting an altered cornice, while number 32 features reeded pilasters, a cornice on consoles, and an overlight with decorative glazing. Numbers 34 and 36 have 20th-century replacement doorcases. Some panelled doors are present. Ground-floor windows are round-arched, with the exception of numbers 34 and 36, which have tripartite windows. All upper-floor windows are flat-arched. Original 6/6 sash windows remain on upper floors of numbers 12, 14, 18, 22-26, 30-32, and 36. A plaque commemorating the philanthropist Caroline Chisholm is affixed to number 32. The building has stacks built into the party walls. Number 10 has a slightly recessed curved corner opening onto Camden Passage, with a two-window range featuring cambered arches, and with significant rebuilding of the second floor. The parapet is continuous. Cast-iron railings define the front area.
