Description
Numbers 25 to 36, Sudley Street, is a row of terraced houses dating from around 1840. They were developed by James Rhodes and built by William Beckingham, John Wilson, and Thomas Allen. The houses are constructed of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond, with stucco detailing. The roofs are hidden behind parapets.
The houses are arranged with two storeys over a basement, each featuring two windows. The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor elaborately decorated with banded rustication. The entrances are generally round-arched, featuring pilasters, cornices and fanlights. Number 35 retains its original panelled door. Number 27 has a segmental-arched entrance with a matching canopy, while number 36 has a flat-arched entrance with pilasters and a multi-paned shop front. The ground-floor windows are round-arched. A decorative sill band marks the first-floor level. The first-floor windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads, and balconies are present at numbers 29 and 30. The original sash windows remain, with radiating glazing bars on the ground floor of numbers 29, 33, and 35, and on the first floor of number 35. A stuccoed cornice and parapet are present at numbers 29-34 and 36, while numbers 25-28 have only a stuccoed parapet, and number 35 has a parapet only. Party wall stacks are visible. A roof extension exists at number 31. Number 25 has been significantly rebuilt. Cast-iron railings are present to the area.
