Description

The War Memorial Chapel at Hornsey Central Hospital is a memorial building constructed in 1921, with the architect remaining unknown. It is made of red brick and features Portland stone dressings. The chapel has a square extension to the north of the 1907-10 cottage hospital, which was designed by George Lethbridge, and it projects eastwards. The entrance has a segmental door case supported by Doric columns, topped with a scrolled pediment. It features panelled double wooden doors that are accessed via four stone steps, with an inscription reading "THE BOROUGH OF HORNSEY WAR MEMORIAL" below the borough arms. On either side of the entrance are square stone tablets displaying the dates 1914 and 1919 within wreaths and frames. The chapel is adorned with Portland stone angle pilasters, string courses, cornices, and balustraded parapets. A projecting canted bay on the south side contains three round windows.

Inside, the walls are panelled with oak wainscoting, consisting of 44 panels, each carved with the names of the deceased, organized by military unit. The southern projection is flanked by wooden Doric columns, and the floor is made of chequered marble. The frieze on the walls features painted inscriptions that read "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH" on the east, "STEADFAST AND UNDISMAYED THEY GAVE THEIR ALL" on the south, "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" on the west, and "THEY DIED THAT YOU MIGHT LIVE IN PEACE AND HONOUR" on the north. The interior is illuminated by an octagonal lantern.

Historically, this chapel serves as the war memorial for the Borough of Hornsey and was inaugurated by the Bishop of Willesden on November 11th, 1921.
