Description

Nos 39 to 51 on Beaufoy Road in Tottenham are a range of houses built in the Gothic style during the third quarter of the 19th century. Each house is two storeys high and features one window. They have tall proportions with front gables and high-pitched slated roofs. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with stone dressings. The first floor has two-light mullioned and transomed casements, while the ground floor has three-light casements, all with segmental relieving arches above. The doors have been altered but retain fanlights under four-centred gauged brick arches. Similar arches can be found flanking the back yards of Nos 43 and 47. There is an illegible coat of arms and motto on the gable end of No 45. These houses were formerly the Alderman Staines Almshouses, which replaced older almshouses in Jacob's Passage, St Giles without, Cripplegate. The original almshouses were sold in 1864 to make way for the Metropolitan Railway, and the new ones were built in Tottenham in 1868 using the proceeds. This group of houses is included partly for their historical interest.
