Description
The Banks family tomb, located to the northeast of the chancel of St Paul's Church in Hammersmith, is a chest tomb dating from around 1763. It is made of Portland stone and features a moulded base with fluted angle pilasters that flank recessed panels. A moulded ledge supports a pyramidal cover. The tomb has inscription panels that are oval on the sides and circular at the ends, although the lettering is worn. The south side commemorates Barbara Banks, the widow of George Banks of Salisbury, while the north side honors her son, George Banks, a mason who passed away in 1779. His inscription notes that he gained general esteem in his profession through strict integrity and merit, and this panel is surrounded by masonic symbols. This is a good-quality mid-18th century chest tomb.
