Description

This is a row of six houses, numbered 36 to 46, with shops at ground-floor level on Black Lion Lane. The houses were built in 1842 using brown brick, with slate roofs. Each house is two storeys high and one window wide. They have arched entrances and segmental-headed windows on the ground floor, with square-headed windows above, all with gauged heads. Original glazing bars have been retained. A brick band defines the division between the two storeys, and the roof has a low pitch, being hipped on the end houses. Number 36 retains its original 19th-century shopfront in good condition, while the shopfront at number 46 has been replaced but designed to be in keeping with the original. The houses are part of the St Peter’s Estate, a development by the ground landlord George Scott starting around 1811.
