Description

This is a sculpture of a draped woman, dating to circa 1959 and created by Karel Vogel. It is made of cast concrete and located in an open space off the Great West Road, close to St Peter’s Church in Hammersmith. The sculpture portrays a semi-nude, idealized female figure with braided hair, styled in the classical tradition. She is seated, but her upper torso is reclining sideways on her folded arms. Drapery flows from the waist, emphasising the arched knee and bunching to create a stable base. The arms rest lightly on an unseen surface; the sculpture's weight is cantilevered out from the base. Cast marks indicate the piece was likely cast in sections. The plinth is original and is constructed from black Staffordshire engineering bricks.
