Description
TQ2378 QUEEN CAROLINE STREET 333/6/10046 TOMB OF SAMUEL JONES APPROX. 5 M. SOUT 23-DEC-98 H OF ST PAUL'S CHURCH
GV II
Table tomb with railings. Probably commemorates Samuel Jones, died 1783. Limestone ashlar. Brick pedestal on which is a limestone plinth, supporting rectangular table tomb with recessed corner pilasters. Oval inscription panels to short sides. Rectangular to long sides. Flat ledger slab on top, with moulded edges. The monument has cast-iron railings (some decay). Rectangular section verticals passing through plain top and bottom rails and terminating in spear-head finials. Corner stiles of heavier section rising to urn finials. A comparison of the transcript of churchyard epitaphs taken in 1882 with the 1948 schedule of monuments to be retained in situ in the churchyard suggests that this good-quality tomb is that of Samuel Jones, died 1783.
