Description
The Tomb of Samuel Jones, located approximately 5 meters south of St Paul's Church, is a Grade II listed table tomb with railings, likely commemorating Samuel Jones who died in 1783. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a brick pedestal topped with a limestone plinth that supports a rectangular table tomb with recessed corner pilasters. The tomb has oval inscription panels on the short sides and rectangular panels on the long sides. A flat ledger slab with moulded edges sits on top. Surrounding the monument are cast-iron railings, which show some signs of decay. The railings consist of rectangular section verticals that pass through plain top and bottom rails, ending in spear-head finials, with corner stiles of a heavier section that rise to urn finials. Historical comparisons of churchyard epitaphs from 1882 and a 1948 schedule of monuments indicate that this well-crafted tomb is indeed that of Samuel Jones.
