Description
The Church of St Michael, built between 1863 and 1865 by James Brooks, is a large church constructed of stock brick with red and blue brick and stone dressings. It features tall slated roofs, a high and wide nave with low, narrow aisles, and a south porch. The church includes a chancel and a south transept chapel, as well as an octagonal bellcote at the east end of the nave. Designed in the Early English style, it showcases plate tracery and a varied rhythm of clerestory and aisle windows. The interior is primarily brick with a stone arcade, and the east window glass is by Clayton and Bell. The church is currently disused. The Church of St Michael and Clergy House form a group with the Sunday School on Leonard Street.
