Description
The Griffin Public House was built around 1889, and its designer is unknown. It features red brick construction with extensive stucco decorations and encaustic tile embellishments. The ground floor has a glazed front, and there are ornamental cast iron window boxes on the second-floor windows. The building stands three storeys tall with a three-bay front facing Leonard Street and a five-bay return on Ravey Street, which continues to the north with a two-storey section and an attic, four bays wide. There is a continuous fascia along both sides, and the ground floor is adorned with glazed terracotta facing that displays the name of the Meux brewery's products.
Inside, notable features include a mirrored screen behind the bar supported by Corinthian columns, a boarded ceiling held up by slender cast iron columns, and a rear room lined with inscribed mirrors that highlight the virtues of the drinks available. An open staircase at the back leads to a former function room on the first floor. The Griffin is a characterful pub from the High Victorian period, showcasing a well-preserved facade and significant interior elements.
