Description

Nos. 6 and 8 Garden Walk, including No. 32 Rivington Street, form a Shoreditch electricity generating sub-station built between 1905 and 1907 by London County Council architects, likely under the direction of Vincent Harris, to serve the LCC tramway system. The building is constructed of brown stock brick with stone cornices and parapet copings, exhibiting a Mannerist classical style. It is a single-story building with attics, featuring a long frontage divided into seven sections. The main walls are plain with rusticated brick quoining. A stone impost band connects three large round-arched windows to the central section, which is flanked by taller, slightly projecting bays containing tall round entrance arches and segmental concave parapets. Lower sections extend beyond these, with a five-light attic story above a double entry on the right side and a three-window range on the left. Rusticated end bays, featuring twelve-pane sashes, complete the composition. The section on the left returns into Rivington Street and its facade displays blank outer bays, the parapet continuing as an impost band above a tall, round-arched entrance set within a rusticated, projecting centrepiece with ramped parapets.

A warehouse building located at Nos. 6 and 8 Garden Walk, including Nos. 32-38 Rivington Street, was constructed in the mid-19th century. It is a single-story building with attics, built of stock brick with stone cornices and parapet copings. The long frontage is divided into seven sections with plain walls alternating with rusticated brick. The central three sections are defined by large round-arched windows connected by a stone impost band. Flanking these are taller, slightly projecting bays with tall round entrance arches and segmental concave parapets. Further sections contain a five-light attic story; and rusticated end bays complete the composition. The section returning into Rivington Street has blank outer bays flanking a rusticated, projecting centrepiece with a high round-arched entrance and double raised parapet.
