Description
Nos. 6-8 on Great Eastern Street is a warehouse and office building dating from around 1882. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a parapetted roof. The building rises five storeys and is situated on a flat-iron site with a curved corner, displaying a two-window range on one side and a six-window range on both Great Eastern Street and the return side.
The design includes attached giant pilasters that extend through the fourth floors of the curved sections, with windows grouped under two-storey architraves. The second and fourth floor windows are round-arched. There is an entablature at the ground and second floors, along with a projecting cornice on the articulated ranges. The elevations at the far ends step down to four storeys and adopt a more utilitarian style, featuring a simple buck pier system at the rear, enhanced by stone aedicules facing Great Eastern Street.
The stone detailing is of higher quality compared to the mass-produced ornamentation found on nearby warehouses from the same period. The curved corner of the building has significant townscape value, which remains intact despite alterations to the ground floor and the insertion of new windows.
