Description
The Church of St Barnabas is a mission church built between 1910 and 1911 by Professor Sir Charles Reilly, who also decorated it in 1935-1936. It is constructed from stock brick and features concrete vaults supported by expanded steel reinforcement, all covered in asphalt. The church has a wide three-bay nave flanked by narrow passage aisles, with a baptistery located in an arched recess at the liturgical west end. A screen separates the nave from the chancel, which is otherwise continuous and includes narrow transepts. The apse has a three-bay ambulatory.
The south transept contains an organ loft with an open timber balustrade, and behind it is a projecting choir vestry. All the windows are square leaded lights. The screen, which includes elaborate iron gates presented in 1915, was completed as Reilly intended in 1935-1936, with figures added to the design by Tyson Smith in memory of the Denby family. The church features timber altar rails at the raised altar, choir stalls, sanctuary chairs designed by Reilly, and a font. There is also a side altar with a marble surround.
