Description
The Shacklewell Green War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1920, located on Shacklewell Green next to Shacklewell Lane. It is made of carved limestone and features a gabled frieze with a relief carving of the crucifix, flanked by kneeling figures of the Virgin Mary and St John, all set atop an octagonal Roman Doric column that stands approximately 2.5 meters high. The frieze also displays the Glory Cross in relief on its other three sides. The column's capital is decorated with foliage, and the column itself features a zig-zag pattern. The memorial is supported by a tapering plinth that is 0.7 meters high and a two-tiered octagonal base that is 0.5 meters high. The front of the plinth bears the inscription: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SHACKLEWELL WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1918." The names of 101 individuals who lost their lives are inscribed on the remaining three sides. The memorial is enclosed within an octagonal area surrounded by railings.
