Description

The Business School at London Metropolitan University, formerly known as Electra House, was built between 1900 and 1903 and served as the headquarters for the international telegraph company, Cable and Wireless. Designed by Belcher & Joass with sculpture by George Frampton, the building features a stone façade with a granite podium and a slated roof. It stands five storeys tall with dormers and consists of twelve bays, presenting a monumental classical style that is nearly symmetrical, highlighted by a central dome.

The ground and first floors are rusticated, and there is a central round arched entrance that spans two storeys. Flanking the entrance are slightly advanced rusticated pavilions topped with small pediments. A concave colonnade connects these pavilions, with a dome situated above. The building is adorned with giant Corinthian columns on either side, extending to the second and third storeys, and features a main cornice above the third floor. Most windows are square-headed, except for those on the first floor, which have semicircular arches. An oriel window on the left corner rises two storeys, and the building is embellished with extensive figure sculpture, including a bronze globe finial atop the dome supported by putti.

Inside, there is an elaborate two-storey entrance hall made of stone, featuring Ionic columns. An original stained glass window above the entrance door symbolically represents wireless communications.

In 1944, the City of London College took over the building, which later became part of the Business School at London Metropolitan University.
