Description

Lutyens House is a large, 7-story building constructed between 1924 and 1927, designed by Edwin Lutyens. It occupies a significant block between Finsbury Circus and Moorgate, extending to incorporate numbers 94 to 100 on the latter street. The building is faced in elaborate Portland stone, employing a free and classical style with extensive carved decoration. The south return and west elevation, facing Moorgate, are the most prominent. The ground floor features round-arched openings, including three entrances directly onto Finsbury Circus. The two stories above the ground floor are treated as a single element, surmounted by a richly modelled engaged Corinthian order. The building has a hipped, slated roof with a concealed gutter and a modest eaves cornice. Two piers, topped with urns, mark the entrances on Finsbury Circus. Simpler entrances are located on the south elevation and within the west front, which incorporates access to the Moorgate underground station.
