Description
The gatehouse to the Church of St Bartholomew the Great, located in West Smithfield, dates back to the 13th century. It features the original west door of the south aisle leading to the nave, which has been adapted as a gateway to the churchyard. The gateway is complemented by a later superstructure from the early 17th century. It boasts a richly moulded arch, although much of it has been renewed on the outer side. There is a small, blind arch in the walling to the south. The upper part of the gatehouse is two storeys high and timber framed, with renewed mullioned and transomed windows. It has a prominent eaves-cornice and a small timbered gable with a window, all topped by a tiled roof. Additionally, there is a staircase wing at the rear that was added in 1932.
