Description
The gateway and churchyard wall on the east and south sides of St Bartholomew's Churchyard were built in 1855 by J L Pearson. They are made of rock-faced sandstone with smooth ashlar dressings and feature wrought-iron railings. The structure has a chamfered plinth and quoins. The east gateway is flanked by buttresses and features a segmental-pointed arch with double-chamfered outer orders, a hollow-chamfered inner order, and double-chamfered jambs. Above the arch is gabled coping with a small central trefoiled gablet for a finial, which was missing at the time of the resurvey in April 1987. The gateway includes 20th-century oak gates with iron strap hinges and a spiked top. The walls step down on either side, with five piers to the left and seven piers to the right, including the end piers. These walls have chamfered coping and iron railings with plain spiked bars and plain square-section principals. The adjoining wall on the south side of the churchyard is approximately 25 meters long and features a plinth and chamfered coping.
