Description

Haldenby Grange Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with later alterations and additions. The original section is built of red-brown brick, while a later addition uses lighter brick. The roof is covered with pantiles. The building has a double-depth plan, originally comprising two rooms arranged around a central entrance hall on the south front. A single-room addition was later built to the right. The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic, featuring two first-floor windows to the original section and a single window to the addition. A straight joint indicates the point where the two builds join. The original front door is a six-panelled door beneath a moulded lintel and a plain overlight, flanked by two modern casement windows in the original openings with sills. A 4-pane sash window is located to the right of the addition. The first floor has similar windows to both sections. All window and door openings are topped with segmental brick arches. A section of the right-hand addition is faced with different brick, suggesting a later alteration or rebuild. Stone-coped gables feature shaped kneelers, and end stacks are present on both the original section and extension. The left return elevation has an attic hatch with a board door. The rear elevation includes a blocked door, modern casements to the main range, an 18th-century six-panelled door, a modern ground-floor casement, a first-floor hung sash, and an 8-pane sliding sash window to the addition - all with segmental brick arches. Internally, the original section contains an open-well staircase with a moulded handrail, column-on-vase balusters with square knops; a full inspection was not carried out. The farmhouse was formerly part of the now deserted village of Haldenby, which ran along the banks of the Old River Don, extending as far east as Haldenby Hall.
