Description
The Church of St Bartholomew the Great is a Grade I listed building located in West Smithfield, EC1. It is the surviving eastern portion of a former Augustinian Priory founded in 1123. The church features one bay of 12th-century nave along with a crossing and shortened transepts. The 12th-century apsed choir includes a vaulted ambulatory, while the 14th-century clerestorey and timber roof add to its architectural significance. The 14th-century Lady Chapel is also part of the structure. A brick tower from the early 17th century is situated to the southwest of the crossing and is topped with a small timber cupola. Inside, there is a notable late medieval tomb of the founder and other later monuments. The building has undergone significant alterations and rebuilding over the years. The east wall of the 15th-century cloister has been reconstructed, incorporating older fragments.
