Description
Nos. 41 and 42 on Cloth Fair is an early 17th-century house that has been converted into offices. It was restored by Seeley and Paget in 1930. The building is made of red corner brick and has four storeys, plus an additional storey in a tiled roof with a hipped, boarded gable facing the street. The ground storey features an arcade, which is largely modern. Above, there are pairs of two-storeyed timber bay windows that now have casement windows. The building includes brick storey bands and a timber eaves cornice.
Inside, there is a fine panelled room on the second floor with much early woodwork, and a similar room with painted panelling on the floor below. A 17th-century staircase leads from the second floor to the attic. This building is particularly noteworthy as it survived the Great Fire of London, and the restoration by Seeley and Paget was both sensitive and archaeologically accurate.
