Description

The Church of St Clement, built between 1683 and 1687 by Sir Christopher Wren, is a Grade I listed building located on Clement's Lane, EC4. It features a rectangular body with a short south aisle and a south-west tower. The exterior is currently covered in stucco with some stone dressings. The principal windows are round-arched, with segmentally arched openings above; many of these openings are now blind, and some of the upper ones have been altered. The west door, which is recessed and round-arched, has been altered, and there are three windows above it, with the central one being blind. The church has a cornice, a central pediment, and a shaped parapet, with a reduced cornice on the north elevation. The doorway at the west end and the main windows are all blocked. The east elevation features three main windows of differing sill heights. There is a vestry, partly from the 17th century, which is very plain. The simple tower has round-arched and circular windows, with mullioned openings to the belfry and a crowning balustrade.

Inside, the church has an order of Corinthian pilasters above high wainscot, with a pair of columns in the south aisle, which previously had a gallery. The groined vault rises to a flat ceiling with a large circular panel in the center, which was renewed in 1925. The pattern of windows and blind panels on the east side varies, with three large openings of differing sill heights and three large lunettes over the south aisle. The church contains fine original fittings, including a large reredos (with later coloring), a pulpit and tester, an organ above the entrance lobby, door cases, a communion table and rails, stalls, and a marble font with a cover.
