Description
Adelaide House is a large building completed in 1924 to 1925 by the architects Sir John Burnet and Tait. It has 11 storeys, with two levels situated below the entrance that leads from London Bridge. The building features a steel frame and is faced in Portland stone and grey granite, showcasing a design with a strong vertical emphasis and elements inspired by archaic Greek and Egyptian architecture. The entrance is marked by a row of pseudo-Doric columns, which have some decorative carvings above them. A prominent coved cornice runs below the plain top storey, while the storey beneath it is treated as a frieze. The rear elevation is irregular and constructed simply from yellow and white glazed brick, with concrete lintels and iron fire escapes.
