Description

Fishmongers' Hall is a prominent, detached building located on London Bridge, constructed between 1831 and 1834 by architects Henry Roberts and George Gilbert Scott. It is designed in the Greek revival style and features two main storeys made of Portland stone, with an order of Ionic columns and pilasters. Below the level of London Bridge, there is a double basement made of granite. The principal basement windows are arched and supported by an arcade that leads to a balustraded terrace overlooking the river. Above this terrace is a six-columned portico, with a pediment that rises through the balustrade, crowning the entablature. The entrance features a pair of columns in antis and a modelled attic that incorporates a coat of arms. The area is enclosed by a granite balustrade, which includes a pair of cast iron lamp standards at the entrance. The rear of the building is plain and irregular, constructed of brick and partly rendered. The interior has been partly reconstructed in facsimile and has undergone some alterations following damage in World War II. Notable interior features include a fine entrance hall with a Doric colonnade, a double branching staircase, a first-floor courtroom, a dining room, and a banqueting hall.
