Description
The Monument is a Grade I listed structure located on Monument Street, built between 1671 and 1677 by Sir Christopher Wren. It was erected to commemorate the Great Fire of 1666, which started nearby. The monument features a colossal Doric column made of Portland stone, standing on a high base adorned with carved reliefs. The capital of the column supports a gallery, which is enclosed by a plain iron railing and a later cage, accessible via a spiral staircase that wraps around an open well. At the top, there is a crowning finial made of gilt copper, resting on a stone drum. The Monument is also scheduled as an ancient monument.
