Description

The City Temple, located on Holborn Viaduct, was built in 1873 by H. F. Lockwood. Most of the building, except for the north front and south-west corner, was rebuilt by Seely and Paget after sustaining war damage. It is constructed from honey-coloured stone. The north front features a central two-storey Palladian portico with a Corinthian order above a Tuscan order, and a pedimented entablature with a sculptured tympanum. The flanking bays have a channelled ground floor with vermiculated voussoirs above round-headed windows, while the first floor features aedicular windows topped with a cornice. The right-hand bay includes a tall two-stage tower; the lower stage has a Corinthian order with square corner columns and half columns beside round-headed windows, and the entablature has a frieze carved with wreaths and swags. The upper stage has diagonally projecting coupled Composite columns flanking round-headed windows and supports an octagonal drum topped with a copper cupola and gilded cross. The building also includes No. 49 Shoe Lane.
