Description
Nos 140 to 144 Leadenhall Street, incorporating No 139, is a building designed in 1929 by Lutyens, Whinney and Hall. It features a tall Portland stone front in a modified classical style with five main storeys. The ground storey is arcaded and open at the centre to a vaulted lobby. There is a shaped window at the rusticated mezzanine level, while the second storey has corniced and pedimented windows, with plain windows above. The building has a parapet and part balustrade, with two open, arched and pedimented end pavilions in front of a much recessed, two-storeyed attic. This attic includes a central pediment and elaborate open end towers with Corinthian pilasters and shaped roofs topped by gilt balls. The plain east flank is now exposed, and the rear of the building is of no particular interest.
