Description

The Hill Garden central temple summerhouse is a Grade II* listed structure located on North End Way in Camden. Built around 1912 by Thomas H Mawson, it is part of a garden scheme for Lord Leverhulme at The Hill, now known as Inverforth House. This summerhouse connects the Western Pergola and the Bridge. It features a circular design set on a brick and stone banded plinth, with Portland stone walls that open on the east and west sides, supported by Doric columns. The west side includes a wrought-iron gate, while the south side is adorned with a balustrade. The summerhouse has an entablature and a projecting modillion cornice, decorated with lion masks at intervals, and is topped with a copper domed roof. Access is provided from the Western Pergola via a flight of steps with stone balustrades. Historically, the terraces were constructed using spoil from the Hampstead Tube excavations, offering excellent views towards the house and Southern Pergola, as well as over Hampstead Heath. This part of the garden is now separate from the house and is open to the public, following the division of the garden when the house became a hospital.
