Description

The Hill Garden western summerhouse is a Grade II* listed structure located to the west of the Western Pergola, built around 1912 by Thomas H Mawson as part of a garden scheme for Lord Leverhulme at The Hill, now known as Inverforth House. This section of the garden is now owned separately from the house.

The summerhouse features brick screen walls with rusticated quoins and a pyramidised slate roof. The western side is open and supported by Portland stone Doric columns that carry a stone entablature, which includes a decorated lead rainwater gutter. There is an attached cast and wrought-iron balustrade with a scroll and floral design that leads to a viewing platform offering excellent views over Hampstead Heath and into the northern garden. The north and south facades have lunettes with keystones and tile dressings, while the eastern facade facing the pergola includes a stone niche in a rectangular surround with a keystone.

Historically, the terraces were constructed using spoil from the excavation of the Hampstead Tube. The summerhouse provides impressive views over Hampstead Heath and back towards the house. The garden was divided when the house was converted into a hospital, and this part of the garden is now open to the public.
