Description

The Hill Garden western pergola is a colonnaded structure built around 1912 by Thomas H Mawson as part of a garden scheme for Lord Leverhulme at The Hill, now known as Inverforth House. The pergola runs approximately 100 meters in an east-west direction, linking the Western Summerhouse and the Central Temple Summerhouse. It features paired and single Doric columns made of Portland stone that support a timber pergola superstructure designed to resemble a Doric entablature. On the north side, there is a solid brick screen wall, and the pavement is tiled. Access to the pergola is provided by balustraded steps at the north-west end from the northern garden, as well as steps on the south side. Historically, the terraces were constructed using spoil from the excavations for the Hampstead Tube. The pergola offers views south across the woodland of Hampstead Heath and, at its western end, into the northern garden. This section of the garden is now open to the public, having been separated from the house when it became a hospital.
