Description

The Hill Garden cruciform pergola is a Grade II* listed structure located on North End Way in Camden. Built between 1906 and 1910 by Thomas H Mawson as part of a garden design for Lord Leverhulme at The Hill, now known as Inverforth House, this pergola features four colonnaded sections arranged in a cross plan along the central axis. The western arm leads to a bridge, the short eastern arm connects to a formal pond, and the southern arm links to the Southern Pergola.

The pergola is constructed with paired and single Doric columns made of Portland stone, supporting a timber superstructure that mimics a Doric entablature. The flooring consists of brick pavement with stone balustrading. The north and south arms are elevated on the western side, resting on brick terrace retaining walls that create continuous outbuildings, which include three-light square-headed windows with concrete lintels. The western arm is similarly raised to span low ground leading to the bridge and originally ended in a conservatory before Mawson's extensions in 1912.

Historically, the terraces were built using spoil from the excavation of the Hampstead Tube, providing excellent views. The garden was divided when the house was converted into a hospital, and this section of the garden is now open to the public.
