Description
The War Memorial at the Church of St Michael is a First World War memorial erected in 1920, designed by Clement William Jewitt. It is carved from Lancaster Freestone and stands in the churchyard of St Michael’s Church, located immediately south-west of the church and adjacent to Camden Road.
The memorial features a crucifix atop a foliage capital on a tapering octagonal shaft that is approximately 4 meters high and has a moulded base. The top arm of the cross is adorned with an elaborately carved canopy. The shaft includes an inscription from the Jesus Prayer: JESU MERCY. It rests on an octagonal pedestal that is 0.8 meters high, which in turn sits on a two-tiered octagonal base that is 0.7 meters high.
Around the base of the shaft is the inscription: GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. The pedestal features eight panels that list 100 names of the Fallen, along with additional names on the base. The upper tier of the base bears the inscription: ‘1914 FOR ENGLAND 1919’.
