Description

The Princess Louise Public House is a mid-19th century public house located on High Holborn in Camden. The interior was designed in 1891 by William B Simpson and Sons. The building is constructed of yellow brick, featuring stone and terracotta dressings.

The exterior is four storeys high with four windows and has a double-fronted facade. The ground floor showcases red granite columns and pilasters, which have masks on their capitals, supporting an entablature flanked by modified consoles. A central bow window is adorned with arched and lozenge lights and is flanked by wide entrances. The upper floors feature recessed sash windows with moulded stone heads, enriched impost bands, and bracketed sills, along with cast-iron window guards on the second and third floors. The entablature is detailed with a dentil cornice and rosettes in the frieze, topped by a parapet.

Inside, the public house boasts decorative polychrome tile work, gold embossed glass by R Morris & Son, stained glass, and original mahogany bar fittings by WH Lascelles and Co. The bar area is highlighted by four cast-iron Corinthian columns that support a patterned ceiling with a moulded cornice and a polychrome tile frieze decorated with urns and swags. An elaborate wrought-iron balustrade features on the staircase between the ground and first floors. The first-floor bar includes good fittings and an Art Nouveau dado. Additionally, there is an interesting contemporary gents' WC in the basement, which features marble urinals and retains some tiled walls and fittings. The Princess Louise Public House is listed as a Grade II* building due to its rich example of a Victorian public house interior.
