Description

Aviation House, formerly known as the Church of the Holy Trinity, is a church built between 1909 and 1911 by architects J Belcher and JJ Joass. It is constructed from Portland stone and features a rectangular plan with an eastern apse and a western concave screen wall, designed in the Edwardian Baroque style. The facade is concave, with a central semicircular projecting portico supported by Corinthian columns, which holds an entablature that extends across the flanking walls. Above the portico is a shallow dome topped with an enriched urn, and similar urns sit atop the terminating pillars of the flanking walls. Round-arched niches with entrances below and tablets supported by sculptured angels above are located on either side of the portico. Although a projected central tower was never built, a shaped gable now appears behind the portico, featuring an enriched tablet topped with a bellcote and a cast-iron balcony.

Inside, the church was not finished with stone facing due to budget constraints, so the walls are now white-washed brick with exposed brick above. The roof features a tunnel vault in concrete, with openings from the middle north and south windows. All windows are tall and round-headed.

The design of the facade is loosely inspired by S. Maria della Pace in Rome, created by Pietro da Cortona. The church became redundant in 1994.
