Description
No. 5 Great Queen Street is a terraced house dating from the early to mid-18th century, with a late 19th-century front. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and stands four storeys tall. The late 19th-century shopfront features four large round-headed panes, one of which is part of the entrance, divided by twisted cast-iron colonnettes. Above the shopfront, there is continuous glazing on each floor, divided into four sections by cast-iron columns that support continuous stone lintels. The building is topped with a cornice and a parapet.
Inside, the staircase has an open string on the lower flights and is closed above, with paired newel posts and twisted balusters, three to each step. Some balusters may be replacements, as there are both earlier and later types present. The interior also features a panelled dado, original doors, and panelling in the first-floor rooms, although the overdoors and the first-floor front fireplace date from around 1900. The ground floor office retains some original panelling as well.
