Description

Powis House is a house built around 1685, designed by William Winde for the Marquis of Powis, with craftsmanship by A Jordan. The exterior was rebuilt in the early 20th century by Sir Edwin Lutyens, maintaining a 17th-century style. The house features brown and red brick with stone dressings, including rusticated stone quoins. It has a stone semi-basement, bands on each floor, and a cornice with dentils and modillions. The roof is tiled and hipped, with pedimented dormers and stone-dressed chimney stacks.

The building has three storeys, an attic, and a semi-basement, with seven windows and a central pedimented three-window bay. The entrance has two doors flanked by rusticated pilasters and an entablature with an open pediment, accessed by twin quadrant flights of steps with wrought-iron railings and an overhead lamp holder. The sash windows have gauged flat brick arches and exposed boxing, with the second-floor center window featuring a stone architrave and cherubs holding a cartouche. The north end of the house extends over a brick-arched arcade leading to Remnant Street.

Inside, the house has a notable 19th-century open well staircase, panelled rooms, enriched doorcases, and other features. The only interior element that may date back to the 17th century is a carved marble chimney piece on the second floor. Additionally, there are attached cast-iron railings with urn finials surrounding the cobbled forecourt.
