Description
Heath House is a substantial detached house built in the early 18th century, with an early 19th-century extension on the right and a later addition to the rear. The building is constructed of multi-coloured stock brick, featuring red brick dressings and a band at the first-floor level. It has a hipped tiled roof with segmental-headed dormers and a late 19th-century terracotta bracketed cornice. The house is two storeys high, with attics and a semi-basement, and has a double front with five windows, while the extension has two windows.
The entrance features an Ionic pedimented portico with a radial patterned fanlight and a panelled door. The windows have gauged red brick flat arches and slightly recessed sashes with exposed boxing. The extension includes a tripartite sash window at ground floor level. Above the terracotta cornice, there is a cement balustraded parapet, and the right-hand return has a canted bay that rises the full height of the house.
Historically, from 1790, Heath House was the home of Samuel Hoare, a Quaker banker and philanthropist, and it has associations with notable figures such as William Wilberforce and Elizabeth Fry. The interior has not been inspected.
