Description

The Hampstead War Memorial is a notable structure consisting of a Portland stone obelisk placed on an octagonal plinth with a three-stepped base. Surrounding the base is a narrow planted border and a grassed area, which is enclosed by a semi-circular low red brick wall topped with stone. Access to the memorial is provided by two sets of three steps on either side.

At the back of the memorial, there is a low red brick wall topped with iron railings that separates the memorial enclosure from Heath House, which is also listed. Flanking the wall on either side are two short red brick walls, approximately 3 meters high, that frame the obelisk. Each of these walls features stone plaques with inscriptions.

The inscription on the north face of the obelisk honors those from the borough who lost their lives in the Great War from 1914 to 1918. The south face of the obelisk displays the Coat of Arms of Hampstead, along with the inscription "BOROUGH OF HAMPSTEAD."

On the flanking wall to the west of the obelisk, there is a stone plaque adorned with a laurel wreath, which includes a quote from Keats reflecting on the honor of the country and the importance of freedom. The dates 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 are also inscribed.

On the east flanking wall, there is a stone plaque featuring Hampstead’s Coat of Arms and its motto ‘NON SIBI SED TOTI,’ meaning ‘not for oneself but for all.’ This plaque commemorates the men and women of Hampstead who gave their lives for their country in the two great wars.
