Description
Numbers 36-47 and attached railings form a terrace of twelve houses, now largely small hotels, that comprise the west side of Argyle Square. The houses were built between 1840 and 1849 and have been altered since. They are constructed of yellow stock brick, with some later patching, and No. 42 is stuccoed. Numbers 36 and 37 have stuccoed ground floors, while numbers 38-40 and 43-46 have channelled cement ground floors, and No. 41 has a painted ground floor. The houses are arranged over four storeys and have basements. Each house has two windows. Numbers 36 and 47 have single-storey, one-window extensions on their returns for entrances. The ground-floor openings are architraved and round-arched. Where unaltered, the doorways have pilaster-jambs supporting cornice-heads, patterned fanlights, and panelled doors. Numbers 36 and 47 also feature single-storey extensions on their returns. Numbers 36 and 47 have square-headed ground floor windows. The upper floors have gauged brick flat arches over a variety of recessed casements and sashes, with the first floors featuring architraves and cast-iron balconies. The houses have parapets. The interiors have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with bud finials are present to the areas.
