Description
Number 23, Pond Street, is a house dating from circa 1760, originally built by Richard Norris. It was altered in circa 1811, 1903 and 1982-5. The building is constructed of stucco with a tiled mansard roof, brick chimney stacks and dormers. It has three storeys, an attic and a basement, and features four windows. The entrance has a bracketed cornice hood, patterned overlight and a panelled door, approached by steps. The recessed sash windows on the left-hand bay are arranged in a full-height shallow segmental-arched recess. The building is topped with a battlemented parapet.
The interior, which has not been inspected, is noted to retain an original staircase with turned balusters and a panelled room.
Attached cast-iron railings with torch flambe finials define the areas.
Historically, the building was originally Nos 23 and 25 Pond Street. In circa 1811, both properties were altered to three storeys, gained a mansard roof and attic windows, and the two bays of No. 23 were reduced to one. Around 1903, the First Cadet Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) built their headquarters in the garden of No. 25 and adapted the houses for their purposes; during this time the entrance to No. 23 was altered to a window and the battlemented parapet was added. The building was converted to offices between 1982 and 1985.
