Description
The Tramwaymens Bus Shelter is a purpose-built structure from around 1893, designed for the tramwaymen of the London Tramway Company, which extended its services to South End Green by 1886. The application for its construction was submitted by John Sanders to the vestry of the Parish of St John Hampstead.
This shelter features a timber frame with a partial midrail and some weatherboarding arranged diagonally. It has a half-hipped roof covered in shingles, topped with a central square louvred cupola, also shingled. The layout includes a lavatory on the northwest side, a central open-fronted shelter, and a canteen on the southeast side.
The southwest front showcases a lavatory door with diagonal weatherboarding, an open-fronted shelter supported by a square wooden pier, and a 4-light window and door leading to the canteen. The northwest end has diagonal weatherboarding and a central window, while the southeast end features some diagonal weatherboarding and a 4-light window. The northeast front is finished with plain wood and includes three two-light casements.
