Description
No. 31 Pond Street is a terraced house dating from circa 1832, with alterations made in the mid-20th century by Ernst Freud. The house is constructed of stucco and has two storeys and four windows. A square-headed doorway is marked by pilasters supporting an entablature. Above the door is a patterned overlight, and the panelled door sits on a tiled threshold, all approached by a tessellated path. The ground floor windows are architraved sashes with margin glazing. The first-floor windows are architraved casements, also with margin glazing, blind boxes, and cast-iron balconies. The building is finished with a cornice and blocking course. The interior remains uninspected. The house was formerly the home of Sir Julian Huxley, a biologist and first director general of UNESCO, who lived there from 1943 to 1975, a fact commemorated by a plaque.
