Description
A pair of semi-detached houses, numbers 19 and 21, with attached railings and walls, built in the late 18th century, and altered subsequently, with number 21 having a 20th-century refronting. The houses are constructed of multi-coloured stock brick. Number 19 has a tiled mansard roof with dormers, while number 21 has a pantiled mansard roof with dormers.
Originally symmetrical in design, the houses have three storeys, basements, and attics. They feature outer entrance bays and inner bays with canted bays that extend from the basement through the first floor. Number 21 now has an additional bay. Round-arched entrances are surrounded by stucco with impost bands, keystones, and cornices. The doorway of number 19 has pilaster jambs, a cornice head, a fanlight, and a panelled door. Number 21’s doorway has panelled reveals, a cornice head, a fanlight, and a panelled door, approached by steps with cast-iron railings. Gauged red brick flat arches top slightly recessed sash windows. Above the canted bays are second-floor Diocletian windows. Number 21 has a plain brick band at the second floor level and a segmental pediment above the ground floor window. A parapet is finished with a plain brick band below.
The interiors were not inspected, but the interior of number 21 retains a good Rococo ceiling in the ground floor bay room. Attached cast-iron railings, with torch flambe finials, sit on low brick walls defining the areas. The group value is derived from the buildings’ architectural and historical significance.
