Description
The gates, piers, and boundary wall surrounding the Church of St Stephen in Hampstead were built around 1871 and are attributed to SS Teulon. They are made of purple Luton brick, stone, and wrought iron.
The wall encircles both the Church of St Stephen and the Hampstead Hill School. It is stepped to follow the slope of the land from northwest to southeast. The structure consists of a low brick wall interspersed with taller brick piers, primarily constructed from purple Luton bricks in a Dutch bond. A chamfered horizontal stone string-course runs at mid-height, topped with chamfered stone coping. Along the northern and western lengths of the wall, there are several recessed areas that include built-in timber benches.
There are three sets of 19th-century wrought iron gates located on the northern and western sections of the wall. Each gate features doors and overthrows designed in a scroll pattern. The principal gates at the northwest main entrance have an iron finial at the center of the overthrow and scroll work on the wall where it returns to the east and south. The piers supporting these gates are topped with stone finials, which are carved with pediments and inset roundels featuring floral motifs.
It is noted that the timber fencing and trellis located above and behind the wall are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
