Description
The War Memorial at the Church of St Anne is a First World War memorial erected around 1920. It is made of carved granite and is located in the churchyard of St Anne’s Church, positioned to the south-west of the church tower, which is also listed as Grade II.
The memorial features a botonée cross atop a capital at the top of a tapering octagonal shaft, which stands approximately 3 meters high. This shaft rises from a trapezoidal plinth that is set on a two-stage square base, making the total height about 1.5 meters. The plinth is inscribed with the names of 141 individuals. On the east face of the lower base, there is an inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN SACRED MEMORY OF OUR GLORIOUS DEAD FROM THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The west face bears the words: "TRUE LOVE BY LIFE, TRUE LOVE BY DEATH IS TRIED LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND, WE FOR ENGLAND DIED."
