Description

Beechwood is a detached house built in 1840 by George Basevi for his brother. It has undergone later additions and alterations, but the front elevation remains untouched. Originally, it was two separate residences. The building is constructed of stucco with slated roofs and consists of two storeys and basements, linked by a one-window, two-storey staircase extension.

The right-hand range features a double frontage with five windows. The centre first-floor window is flanked by half lights. There is a bowed portico with a cornice and a doorway that is flanked by windows. The doorway is architraved, has a cornice, a pulvinated frieze, and a panelled door. The ground floor has a plain stucco sill band, with recessed sash windows that have glazing bars and ground floor hoods. The eaves have a projecting cornice.

The left-hand range has six windows that are asymmetrically placed. It features a round-arched, architraved doorway with a patterned fanlight and a panelled door, along with recessed sash windows that have glazing bars. The eaves also project here. To the left of this range, there is a slate-roofed loggia added around 1977.

The link between the two ranges has a cornice that continues from the right-hand range and a round-arched first-floor window for the staircase.

Historically, Beechwood was built on the site of Fitzroy House, which was constructed around 1770 and belonged to Lord Southampton before it was demolished in 1828.
