Description
22 Murray Mews is a two-storey building constructed from stock brick, featuring sloping roofs with patent roof lights and extensive use of brick paviours both inside and outside. The building is situated on a compact mews site measuring 18 meters by 7 meters, with part of it previously threatened by road widening. The design includes a deep plan centered around an internal structural wall and a staircase, allowing for flexible use of space. The principal living area is located on the upper level to maximize light, while the lower level offers more adaptable accommodation, including a garage, an architect's studio with its own entrance, and a bedroom with a separate bathroom that can also serve as a studio flat.
The exterior presents a stark, blocky, and somewhat fortress-like appearance, with distinct volumes and minimal openings facing the street. The main entrance is located on the first floor, accessed via external brick stairs and set behind a small dining patio, which also features patent roof lights for the studio below. The windows and glazed doors are framed with thick timber surrounds, and there is a part-paved patio at the rear.
Inside, the building showcases exposed brick walls, including visible clamps connecting it to the adjacent property, along with movable rendered walls, roofs, and galleries. The kitchen, designed by the architect, includes built-in features, full-height Colombian pine veneered internal doors, and tiled floors, complemented by slate worktops and door cills.
