Description

Numbers 1 to 7 are a group of four terraced houses dating from around 1710 to 1715, which were restored in approximately 1980 by Donald Insall & Associates for Rugby Estates. Number 1 was built by J Ritchbell, J Walker, and J Hiron. It is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings, with the second and third floors having been refaced in a multi-coloured stock brick pattern. The house is four storeys high with a basement, and has three windows. It features a wooden Doric doorcase with fluted pilasters supporting an entablature, a square-headed radial patterned fanlight, and a panelled door. The windows have flat arches of red brick, flush frames, and exposed boxing. A parapet tops the building. The interior was not inspected during listing but is noted to retain panelling and a staircase with spiral balusters. Numbers 3, 5, and 7 were altered. They were built by J Cooper and E Chapman, and are constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings. The third floor of each house has been rebuilt in multi-coloured stock brick. These houses are also four storeys tall with basements and have three windows each. Each house has a wooden Doric doorcase with fluted pilasters carrying an entablature, and a square-headed radial patterned fanlight over a panelled door. Number 7 has fine carved, foliated brackets and a hood. The windows have flat arches of red brick; Number 3 has flush frames and exposed boxing, Number 5 has recessed windows with exposed boxing, and Number 7 has recessed windows. The houses have moulded stone bands at the first and second floor levels, and stone cornices at the third floor level. Parapets top the buildings. The interiors were not inspected but retain panelling and original staircases, with Number 3 having a staircase with spiral balusters and carved brackets. Attached to the properties are cast-iron railings with urn and torch flambe finials to the areas. Number 7 also has a cast-iron lamp-holder.
