Description
The police station, built between 1894 and 1896 by architect Norman Shaw, features yellow stock brick with stone bands at the sill levels and below the parapet. It stands three storeys tall and has eight windows. The entrance is a round-arched stone opening engraved with the word "Police," complete with a hoodmould, fanlight, and double panelled doors. To the right, there is a vehicle entrance, now blocked to form a room behind it, which has a stone 4-centred arch with heavy rusticated block dressings. The ground floor has sash windows with stone lintels, with the windows flanking the entrance being paired. The first and second floors feature segmental-arched brick heads and stone keystones, topped by a parapet. The building retains its original rainwater heads and pipes.
Inside, the layout has been altered with partitions and false ceilings. Attached to the building are cast-iron railings with an overthrow that includes a blue lamp marked with the word "Police." The police station was restored in 1984.
